My son's COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant) gave me this pyramid after one of their sessions. The basis of the pyramid is that in order to grow cognitive and more complex ways of thinking, the body must get its sensory needs achieved first. This is not the first time I have heard this. I attended a free workshop for the organization "Asperger Experts" which was founded by Danny Raede (gentleman who was diagnosed with Asperger and ADD when he was 12) who also stated that sensory needs are at the foundation for allowing autistic individuals to learn. This is why there are compression vests at my sons school, why his former ABA provider had sensory activities in their practice, and why his current speech therapist has swings, crash pads, and climbing ladders in clinic. It makes sense that an individual must feel secure in their own body first before having the ability to focus and engage in a particular task/topic. This pyramid is referenced as a guide in an academic article that can be found at the link below. The article is about assessing a child's sensory perception based on norm-referenced standards before partaking in therapeutic horseback riding due to safety concerns.
