Pinch Clips For Finger Strength

Below are the clips I bought that my son's therapist recommended. We use these to increase his finger strength. The goal is to get his fingers to build up strength, so that he can do things such as use scissors, tie his shoes, write, fasten buttons, open jars, utilize zippers, etc. I got these on Amazon and they are color coordinated to signify the pressure required to use them based on where you put your fingers when you begin pinching. I have been using these clips on the strap of one of my purses and having him pinch them off one by one. I make sure that he isn't just "pulling" the clips off. It is very important to make sure he is using his index finger and his thumb to get these clips off. Right now, we are not using the blue and the black clips as these are quite taxing for him right now. His therapist said to make sure that his thumb is "pointed up" when he attempts to take the clips off. The first picture below is where I demonstrate what I mean when I say "pointed up" thumb. I have to prompt him (hand-over-hand) to make sure his hand and finger placement is correct, so that he is getting the benefit of the clips. I am still doing hand-over-hand prompting for now since we have only done this exercise a few times, but I will gradually fade the prompt as I don't want him to become prompt dependent.
